Tips for preparing your suitcase before collection

- Choose a hard-shell suitcase if you can. It protects the contents better during transport. If it's soft-sided, reinforce it by wrapping it in cling film.
- Tuck in loose handles and straps. Anything dangling can get caught in transit; fold away or remove any external parts.
- Fill the gaps. Rolled-up clothes, towels or blankets stop the contents from shifting and cushion any knocks.
- Keep the essentials with you. Documents, medication and valuables travel better in your hand luggage.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
- Leaving it to the last day. Schedule the collection a few days ahead of your flight: that way you travel light and your seasonal clothes are already waiting for you at your destination.
- Guessing the weight by eye. An inaccurate figure complicates the collection and can change the price. Two minutes with the scale sorts it out.
- Sticking the label on badly. Place it on a smooth, visible part of the suitcase, firmly stuck down on all four sides.
