Ireland is a destination many people confuse with the United Kingdom, and it works in a completely different way. The Republic of Ireland is still an EU member, so shipping there from Spain is as simple as shipping to France or Germany: no customs, no duties and no import VAT. Just be clear that Northern Ireland belongs to the UK and has its own rules.

As an island, goods travel by road to northern France and cross by ferry, so transit takes a little longer than to continental Europe. In exchange, GLS coverage reaches every county, from Dublin, Cork and Galway to rural addresses with an Eircode. That seven-character Irish postcode matters: it identifies a specific dwelling and prevents most delivery failures in areas with no street numbering.

The process is the usual one: you get your price online from each parcel's weight and dimensions, pay by card and receive your label by email. Request a pickup at your address anywhere in mainland Spain or drop the parcel at a Parcel Shop, and from there you can follow every scan with your tracking number.

Tips for a smooth shipment

Always ask for the Eircode

It is the Irish postcode, formatted like D02 AF30. Unlike other countries, many rural Irish homes have no street number or name, and without an Eircode the driver may take days to find the address or return the parcel.

Northern Ireland is not Ireland

Belfast, Derry and the rest of Northern Ireland belong to the United Kingdom and require customs paperwork. If your destination has a postcode starting with BT, this is not the right corridor: use the United Kingdom one, where we prepare the documentation for you.

Pack with the ferry in mind

The route involves several handling points and a sea crossing, with more ambient moisture than a purely overland route. Use a rigid box, wrap anything water-sensitive in plastic and tape every edge.

Check the volumetric weight

You are billed on the greater of actual and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 5000). A big, light box can cost more than you expect: shrink the dimensions and you shrink the price.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a parcel from Spain to Ireland take?

Typical transit is 4 to 7 working days from pickup. Dublin and the east of the country are usually at the lower end of the range; the west and rural areas at the upper end.

Are there customs or taxes when shipping to Ireland?

No. The Republic of Ireland is in the European Union, so there is no customs clearance, no duty and no import VAT. The price you see in the calculator is the final price, with Spanish VAT already included.

What if the recipient is not at home?

GLS attempts delivery and, if nobody answers, leaves a notice and usually deposits the parcel at the nearest collection point, where it is held for several working days. The recipient can see everything from the tracking link.
